Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother fell 2 days ago on his knee, he weights around 245lbs. He has multiple medical conditions and was concerned about a blood clot. I took him to the hospital today, they took an X-ray and was told the sharp object that he was feeling on his very swollen knee was a bone spur. There was nothing on his knee before the fall? Can a bone spur form in 2 days?
Bone spurs are usually caused by local inflammation, such as from degenerative arthritis or tendonitis. Most often, they form after an injury to a joint or tendon. When your body thinks your bone is damaged, it tries to fix it by adding bone to the injured area. This creates bone spurs.
Bone spurs can not develop in 2 days. They develop gradually in areas of inflammation. This means that very probably your brother has arthritis on his knees that has caused chronic inflammation and bone spur.
To relieve pain and bring down swelling, your brother can try one over-the-counter pain relievers like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen. I suggest to consult a rheumatologist for the right therapy and the follow up of his condition.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
